Is Mammography Radiation Harmful?

Dr. Vaishnavathi V.V., Consultant Radiologist

There is a common myth that radiation exposure during a mammogram can cause cancer and other harmful side effects. Many women avoid mammography due to this misconception.

Let us discuss the facts – Mammograms expose the breasts to a small amount of radiation within the guidelines accepted by the Doctors and regulatory authorities. The benefits of Mammography outweigh any possible harm from the radiation exposure.1

Breast Imaging Society of India, American Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Radiology, American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Center for Disease Control (CDC) etc. – have all issued guidelines saying that all women should be eligible for screening mammograms starting at age 402.

The world authority on disease control CDC says, ‘At this time, a mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer for most women’.3

On relative terms, even the minute risk of having breast cancer is way more dangerous and fatal compared to the radiation risk from mammography. Hence it is important for women and families to break the myth and understand that annual mammogram screenings are crucial to detect breast cancer early.

Breast cancer cannot be prevented. Early detection is the best protection because it dramatically improves the chances of complete cure, and mammography is the most recommended methodology across the world for early detection.

If you are eligible for breast screening either by age (40 years and above) or due to high-risk factors such as family history (in which case even if you are younger than 40 years), talk to your Doctor today about an annual Mammography plan – A ritual that can save your life!
