A mammography equipment captures a medical image of the breast tissue called mammogram, using low-dose X-ray that is not harmful to you. Mammograms help Doctors to detect breast cancer at very early stage<\/strong>. Sometimes up to three to five years before it can be felt.<\/p>\n

\nWhy is it important to detect breast cancer early?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No one can prevent breast cancer. By the time the mass can be felt, it is usually too late. Hence early detection is the best protection against breast cancer<\/a>. In this context, a yearly mammogram for those who are eligible by age or risk profile helps either rule-out the presence of breast cancer or nip it in the bud.<\/p>\n

How does it feel to undergo mammography?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mammography<\/a> is a diagnostic test. It doesn\u2019t need a prescription or admission to hospital. No pricks too. Just imaging. You will stand in front of the mammography machine. A lab technician or radiologist may help you place the breast between two ergonomically designed trays to minimize discomfort.<\/p>\n

How long does a mammography session take?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tissue may be compressed for a couple of minutes. From the walk into the room, changing robes, getting the imaging done, and the walk out may take about 15 to 30 minutes without counting the waiting time if some patients are ahead of you by turn.<\/p>\n

Why is the breast tissue compressed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just like a blood-pressure device squeezes your arm for an accurate reading, the mammography trays squeeze the breast tissue to a) avoid blurring of the image due to unintended motion while testing, b) to detect even small specs of abnormalities if any, c) to minimize X-ray dosage because the compression evens out the breast tissue and reduces the overall distance the rays have to travel to reach the detector, and d) the test doesn\u2019t have to be redone.<\/p>\n

If you are eligible for breast screening either by age (40 years and above), or due to high-risk factors such as family history (in which case even if you are younger than 40 years), talk to the Doctor today about an annual Mammography plan<\/a> – A simple ritual that can save your life!<\/strong><\/p>\n
